Building History

This building was initially developed by The Singita Animal Sanctuary to be a state of the art Cats Hospital. Initially built by Hamilton Construction a specialized health care contractor, the facility was intended to become the landmark of the Funny Man and television personality Buddy Hackett and his wife Sherry Hackett who co-founded the Singita Animal Sanctuary in 2003.

Los Angeles County Supervisor Michael Antonovich and other celebrities attended the Hospital's ground breaking ceremony on June 19 2004. The Animal Sanctuary declared bankruptcy in 2007 after funding stopped due to the passing of Mr. Hackett. The present ownership bought the project and recently completed it

Location Information

The facility is located just 3 miles from the Osborne Exit of the 210 Freeway in Sylmar, California, in the Los Angeles National Forest on Little Tujunga Canyon Road, a well maintained road which connects with the 14 Freeway to the north east. Easy access to Santa Clarita, Saugus & Canyon Country, the 118 Freeway lies just one exit away from the hospital.

Water is provided through a certified well located on the property and sewage is handled by a rated septic tank. A state of the art Tank & water system is part of the hospital along with a state of the art Fire System.

Floor Plans

1st Floor Plan:

The First Floor contains a large approximately 3,000 sq.ft. Great Hall with a Fireplace initially intended to provide space for Fund Raising events. The first floor has a total area of approximately 8,000 sq.ft.

The Foyer or Lobby is about 1,000 sq.ft, it leads directly into the Great Hall and the stairwell to the second floor.

The main Male & Female bathrooms are located on this floor, along with the kitchen, Utility Room, pantry and 6 private offices of about 320 sq.ft each, two being corner offices.

There is a secondary Hall and additional small utility room.

2nd Floor Plan:

The second floor follows the same layout as the first floor without the Lobby and Great Hall, its total area is approximately 4,000 sq.ft.

The Engineering Room, containing the HVAC and Water Boiler Units is located adjacent to the Stairswell.

A smaller unisex bathroom plus a shower is located adjacent to the second Floor Main Hall, six additional offices of the same size and kind as the first floor with two special purpose rooms with storage are located on this floor as well.

Historical Background of the Area

In 1916 Cecil B. DeMille drove (contrary to the advice of his attorney) to check out a remote ranch for sale in the north end of the San Fernando Valley in Little Tujunga Canyon. DeMille loved it, he relished the privacy and beautiful surroundings. DeMille bought a substantial portion of the lands adjacent to Little Tujunga Canyon Road, he filmed several major motion pictures on these surroundings, had a couple of ranches with weekend cabins, to which, it is rumored, he used to bring his lover actress Julia Faye.

The Singita Animal Sanctuary, sponsored by television personality Buddy Hackett and his wife Sherry Hackett, was a non-profit organization dedicated to rescuing and relieving the suffering of animals in need. The Sanctuary spent nearly three million dollars to develop and break ground on what is today one of the most advanced Animal Hospitals of its kind.

It took over two years for the present ownership to finish the project started by the Singita Animal Sanctuary Building. Permits had to be renewed and construction costs were substantial. The standards of quality set by the Sanctuary were adhered to and no expense was spared to finish the building including surrounding area.
